June 2002 -- The Hansen Dam Lakes Coalition was born out of the citizen's movement to stop the destruction of the beloved Hansen Dam Lakes in spring 2002. Thanks to the enthusiastic dedication of hundreds of concerned residents, a beautiful wildlife sanctuary within the boundaries of one of the world's largest cities has been saved... For the moment. Middle Photo: Garbage & "arrundo donax" (invasive non-native plant) dredged from the San Gabriel River and dumped in one of the Hansen Dam lakes by the Army Corps of Engineers in 2002 (i.e. using garbage removed from one Los Angeles Watershed tributary to pollute another LA Watershed tributary). In early 2003 the Corps announced it would remove the debris, but as of May 2003 it is still there. For more information, contact: HDLC |
